smoking 61 mg midget with 1275 upgrade1961 MG MIDGET MK I |

Just took delivery of a 1961 MG Midget with a 1275 "rebuilt" engine. The starts smoking, significantly, about two minutes after start-up. It goes away after driving it a mile or two. The seller told me the car was restored four years ago and only has less than 2k miles on it. He told me to remove the valve cover, torque the head, and see what type of valve "seals" are being used. He said there are three types. A quick Internet look-up showed me two types, o-ring and cup. He said if the rubber o-rings are used I would need to pull the head and take it to a machine shop and have the higher quality seals installed. I have a lot of other questions about the car but this is the most serious one. BTW, the car runs and drives well but the oil smoke is a big issue. I will save other questions for later. Many thanks for your information. Cheers, Paul
