Greg,
Back in high school in the 70's, I had a '63 Falcon Futura conv. With a 170 six cyl.
There was someting that I think was called a vacuum modulator that was on the trans where the vacuum line connceted to the auto trans. I remember that I had to replace it becasue the engine started sucking up trans fluid and burned it.
This might give teh impression of burning oil also, plus a loss of trans fluid. good luck
