Pull Me Over Red
So here comes another true story about me and my car. When I graduated college the first thing I did was sell my classic car (big mistake) and buy a “reliable” car to get me to work without any problems. So, I put my 1967 Ford Fairlane Convertible up for sale at $4500. Two weeks later I sold it for $4000 and went shopping. I found a 1991 Ford Mustang LX Convertible with low miles and in perfect condition. It wasn’t the GT, but still had the 5.0 engine. So it was quick. It was Red. Red as red can be. PULL ME OVER RED. So there I was, on the lot looking at this striking car. I was 22 years old and really didn’t buy in to the whole “pull me over red” phenomenon. So I bought it. I drove it home with a huge smile on my face.
I had the car for 1 month and then it started. The red and blue in my mirror. “Do you know why I pulled you over?” “No?” “You were speeding.” “Ok.” Then I got out of the car and started the sobriety test. I bring up the sobriety test because this was the only constant for every time I was pulled over. In fact, 10 other officers wanted to check me out in the following 21 months. Yep, you heard correctly. I got pulled over 11 times in the 22 months I had the car.
It begs the question, was it the color? Was it the car? Was I really speeding? Well I can definitely answer the last one, because of the 11 times I got pulled over, only 4 were for speeding. In fact here are the reasons I got pulled over; 4 times for speeding, 3 times for unsafe lane change (I crossed the dotted line), 2 times for wide turns (when making a left turn I drifted into the next lane) and 2 times for a loud stereo (my radio pounded!). But here is the kicker…I didn’t get one ticket in the 22 months I had the car! Of the 11 times, I walked the sobriety line 7 times! The other 4 times, the officer asked if I had anything to drink, I said no and he let me on my way. What gives?
The first 3 times I walked the straight line I was very scared. After that I started doing the test without the officer even asking. One officer even asked if I had done this before. I said yes and we started laughing. In fact, once I passed, I asked him what he though of my observation about the “pull me over red” theory. He was very honest and said he first notice the color, then the car.
What does it all mean? I realized that all 11 times I was pulled over the officer was checking to see if I was drinking. Once they were satisfied, I was able to leave. I also can’t blame the officer about hassling me, they were just doing their job. I also realized that a flashy color equals attention and attention equals being pulled over. So, be prepared for all that comes with a flashy color.
Needless to say, I sold the car and got a small black convertible BMW 3 series. I owned that car for 3 years and was only pulled over once. Weird huh?
