Best Ride 2008
Alright everybody, time is ticking! The 2008 Best Ride Contest was supposed to end in December, but because we were busy updating the site, the holidays getting in the way and the marketing push in January, we are extending the deadline to February 28th. We will then vote for the Best Ride in March and award the new winner in April. For 2009, I am going to hold steady this year and draw the 2009 cutoff at years end. So, from March 1st to December 31st 2009, any entries received will be for the 2009 Best Ride Contest.
To all the applicants that did not win in 2007, you MUST resubmit your ride to be eligible to win in 2008. However, what did we learn about the 2007 contest? The story is a major part of your ride. Just ask Chris Bednar, the 2007 winner.
So, get those submissions in ASAP. You must create an account or log on, then select the ‘Best Ride Contest’ link on the right side of the page (under the main header of Contests) and fill out the form. Remember you must own the car and submit the VIN so we don’t have any duplicate submissions. Times a tickin’….

Raise your hand if you watch the show MuscleCar on Spike TV? Ok, put your hands down. I have another rant, 2 in fact. First, let me say that I love the show; I loved watching it especially when Lou was on the show. He was a one man machine, had great personality and didn’t bite off more than he can chew. On with my rant.
This past Saturday the guys brought in another project, a barracuda that they are building for the president of UFC. I have two rants that I want to tell. First, is how many freakin’ projects do they have going? They have Altered E-Go the Comet, Red Sled the Impala, Tribute Trans-Am the Firebird, Overkill the Challenger and now project Street Fighter which is a Cuda. I have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) as much as the next guy, but this is ridiculous. If they are bringing in new projects in hopes of getting their ratings up and keep everyone’s attention, they are definitely going about it all wrong. Let’s review. Why do you think OverHaulin’ is, or was, so popular? One, they “give” the average Joe a smoking car that they could never restore themselves. And two, they complete the restoration in ONE episode. Not 5, not 10, not 2 seasons, 1 show! Now that grabs my attention…and keeps it! So, by having so many projects, I’m confused to “who’s” on first, “what’s” on second and “I don’t know” is on third. My advice to MuscleCar, finish the projects. We want to see the projects completed. That’s the whole point of the show, right?
My second rant is the segment where they show their audience how to save money. This week they made a tool to remove molding. I literally laughed out loud. The host (can’t remember his name) found a piece of metal lying around the shop and freehanded a design that included two hooks so that he can slide it under the molding and pop it off. Here’s the funny part, he then takes it over to a $1000 dollar band saw (I’m guessing) to cut it out. Then brings it over to the $1000 dollar metal bender thing-a-ma-jig and then welds it together with the $1000 dollar super champion grand jumbo welder (I made that last part up). Or, I can just buy the part for 20 bucks.
Here’s my pledge to all of you. When, not if, this community is large enough to support a half hour show (hosted by me of course, my dad says I have a face for radio…wait...I just got that) I will show all of you how to really restore a car on a budget. No fancy tools, just smart logical ways to get the job done. The first episode will be me looking for the tools needed…a set of regular wrenches, sockets, an air-compressor and a place to rent the rest of the cra…er…stuff we need.
I think I will change my name to Dirk Digler when I become famous ;-)
