How to buy parts!
With the 3 day weekend behind us, I was able to get a lot done on my cutlass.  I posted the most recent pics on my journal here.  One of the big problems that I had was the pesky ground short in the dash.  Through process of elimination (by this I mean, buying parts that I think are broken, replacing them and if the problem still persists, plug the old one back in and returning the new part) I found that the turn signal switch wasn't working properly.  I have 3 car part stores within a mile of each other, let's call them Peckers, Autobone and Papa.  I first went to Peckers and they didn't have the part in stock but the price was $22.99.  "I can get it here in 2 days."  So I left and checked Autobone.  Autobone was at $24.99 but still out of stock.  Finally, Papa had it in stock but it was $30.99.  That's fine just so I could get it done before the weekend was over.  Bought it, took it home and.....wrong part.  Plug for the switch was different.  Turns out, I had the one with side turn lamps and my car did not have the side turn lamps.
So, I drove back to Papa and returned the part.  The guy at Papa apologized and then found the correct part, however now it was $60.00.  "What?  Check...I mean Peckers has it for $22.99."  So the head man went to the back to check what he could do about the price and came back with a price of $41.00.  I politely told the gentlemen no and that I would go get the part at Peckers.  Arrived at Peckers and, sure enough, they quoted me the wrong part (same as Nap...er...Papa).  Peckers now had it at $80.00!  "What? Autobone has it for $25.00?"  So now, the guy at Peckers called Autobone to check the correct price and part.  Autobone had the correct part, but the price was $31.99.  So off to Autobone I went.  Autobone ordered the part and I picked it up the next day.  So, what the hell does this all mean?  I went from a possible $80 price to $32, saving $48.  I learned that each auto parts store has different vendors and at different prices.  Here is what I recommend:  have the part stores phone numbers programmed in to your cell phone and give them a call to see if they have the part and at what price.
One may argue, Papa has the best quality parts...well Autobone's part was from Duralast.  I think it's pretty good and I will be driving the car very rarely so it is good enough for me.  Another may argue that I only use OEM parts and I say, yes.  If your car is a rare rare ride and you will see the value in buying OEM parts then go for it.  My car is a plain Jane Cutlass Supreme with a 350 (now 455).  So, weigh your options.
Also, I learned another thing, the parts store still have a lot of parts for our classics.  I was surprised to find that they had the headlight switch, the high beam floor switch and the turn signal switch.  Who'd thunk it?  And, that's all I got to say about that!

Please help the Cause

A member of the community is working towards a great cause.  Joe Kelly is the founder and promoter of the 3rd Annual SuperCruise and SuperShow'n Shine in Iowa.  All proceeds go to the research of spinal injuries, disease and arthritis.  Joe has asked me to spread the word and help promote the event.  It is their hope that they will attract participation throughout the United States.  So, with all my contacts out there in the custom and classic car world, please assist in this fabulous effort.  Please join Joe and me in supporting this event.  Joe is always looking for sponsorship and will be happy to speak with each and every one of you.  Unfortunately spinal injuries, disease and arthritis are so prevalent today that there isn't a day that goes by we don't meet or learn of someone new that suffers from one or more of these issues.
It is Joe's hope that with the support of the Classic Car Community that his 1950 Chevy 2 Door Deluxe will also be built.  Joe is calling the project "Go Forward 50" themed after the slogan of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation "Go Forward" utilizing the colors in the Foundations logo design.  The hope is to build the car into a custom lead sled, lowered, chopped, channeled and shaved.  We ask that everyone write to the television program Overhaulin' and to Chip Foose in hopes of getting the project on the program.  Once completed, Joe would like to lead the SuperCruise and SuperShow'n'Shine with the "Go Forward 50" front and center.  After which Joe will tour the country with the sled raising awareness and donations for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation as well as Joe's own Foundation, the Joe Kelly Spinal Surgery Foundation.
