Car accessories and how to sell your car

I think we can all agree that we are living in a crazy time of high gas prices, a shaky housing market and rising food costs.  So, if you plan on selling your car, you must be able to present the best product at the best price for you to have any chance of selling it.  What I am trying to say is you must have many accessories/options on the car that the next guy doesn’t have.  It is as simple as that.  Why would I buy your car, when the next car has a bigger engine, bigger rims, new interior, power windows yadda yadda yadda.  “Joseph, I have no idea what you are talking about?”  Sorry, I know I am not being that clear, so I will start my story.

A couple of months ago my wife’s BMW needed new tires.  I called around and I found run-flats for about $1000 and regular tires for about $600.  The rims were only 17 inches so I knew that the tires shouldn’t be that expensive.  My wife’s car is nothing to write home about.  It has the smallest engine that was available, the 2.5 liter V6, but does have the “premium and sport package”…whatever that is.  So, I started thinking.  I remember back in the day that my dad would always fix everything on a car or in a house so that he could sell it.  I always asked myself why my dad didn’t fix those things earlier so we could have enjoyed them.  “Why, dad why?”…as I screamed crying to the heavens on a cold rainy day…on my knees…naked.  Let me explain.  I remember that we had a piece of crap boat.  Nothing worked but the engine, so we did take out to the lake quite a bit.  However, when the ladies came aboard we joked about how the horn, wipers, stereo, trim etc never worked.  Then, a few months later, my dad told us that we were going to sell the boat.  We then fixed everything, put it in the paper and it sold quickly.  “Joseph, what does this have to do with car accessories?”  Sorry, I guess I should have titled this article just “How to sell your car!”  Anyway, it’s not rocket science to know that if your car works and has more options than the next car, yours will sell first.  Let me get back to the tires for my wife’s car.

I looked in the paper and found both rims and tires for $600.  These were off the exact same BMW model but were the 18 inch run-flats that came on a sportier model.  So, my dad and I drove to meet the guy selling the rims, offered him $550 and took them home.  I asked the guy why he was selling them and he said that he wouldn’t get the money he paid for them, so he put back on the old rims that came with the car.  That was the ironic thing.  He was selling them because he thinks he can’t get the money out of them, and I was buying them so that I can sell my car faster.

Back in the day, when I was on that boat, I learned that it would be nice to enjoy life with everything working.  And today, I purposely buy accessories for my cars, knowing that it will assist me in selling it to the next guy.  Another example is when I bought my wife (for her birthday) the iPod interface for her BMW.  “I don’t need it…you’re crazy…why do I need to listen to 1000 songs…you really bought if for yourself…and sleep on the couch.”  Ok so I added the last one in, but what I did with that purchase is increase the value of the car (or at least solidify the current value) made my wife happy (questionable) and will enjoy the product until we sell the car.  In other words, I didn’t buy the iPod interface today and sold the car tomorrow.  I at least enjoyed that accessory.

Let’s recap.  My wife’s BMW now has the 18 inch sportier stock rims, the premium package, the sport package and the iPod interface.  All should help me sell the car in the future.  So, don’t think about how you will lose money if you leave the accessories on the car, think about how easy it will be to sell the car because you have the accessories on the car.  Plus, the icing on the cake is that you enjoyed the car and its accessories the entire time you owned it.  So, when you get ready to sell you car, make sure everything works, emphasize what options your car has that others don’t and always…always check with your wife before buying an iPod interface.  Man, did I catch hell for that.

So there you have it.  I hope you have enjoyed this Newsletter.
