My Hiatus
Hello all. Many of you out there have emailed asking what happened to my newsletters. Let me first apologize to you all for the lack of newsletters sent over the past 9 months. I sort of have a good explanation. The last newsletter I sent out was in July of 2010 and the six months after that was hectic for me to say the least.
First, my family is growing. We found out on Mother’s Day 2010 that another bundle of joy was due January 2011. So, this meant we needed more space, thus the renovation of my house began. Walls were added, flooring was installed, painting was done and I did it all myself…with the help of my fantastic dad. OK fine, I was still the apprentice to my dad, but I did do all the finishing touches. That took me to the end of 2010. Then the little bugger came two weeks early and boy did things change. Can anyone tell me how the heck that much poop comes out of a 7 pound baby? Needless to say, my wife is a superstar! I have no idea how she does it, but she got us through the last 3 months. Without further ado, meet Sophia Noelle…
Second, to keep up with now two daughters pulling at my wallet, I am a real estate agent on the side of my regular 9 to 5 job. So, as many of you know, the real estate market in Arizona is picking up steam and I got very busy since last summer. This means the free time I had went to negotiating deals for my friends and family.
Finally, I fell asleep. No really, when I sat down to begin to write a newsletter, I start nodding off, kind of like what is happening now...I want to … continue……to……type…but…I……………….zzzzzzzzzzz.
Anyway, I will try to keep up and keep you all entertained. Thanks for all the support.
Gas vs. Diesel vs. Hybrid
With the advent of the digital video recorder and during the few free minutes a day I have, I began watching Top Gear on BBC America. This show is great! You must watch it. It is about three English blokes making up great and crazy races to show everyone the reality of our cars. For example, the season finale was a race against GOD! The main guy hopped in a Jaguar XJ and raced from the western most part of England to the eastern most part of England, all before the sunrise. So, he watched the sunset in the west and then raced to the east to watch the sunrise. Awesome.
However, that is not what I want to write about. Two episodes sparked an interesting debate I had at work. The first was an episode where the guys had to drive from Switzerland to Blackpool on one tank of gas. This means they needed to travel about 755 miles on one tank of gas. So, two of the guys picked some crazy tiny gas efficient cars, and the third picked the turbo diesel Jaguar XJ. Guess which one won…the Jaguar! I did some research. According to a road test done on that car in London, it starts at 35 mpg and can get up to 60 mpg if driven conservatively.
The other episode that I want to discuss is the one where they compared the Toyota Prius with the BMW M3. You see, they had the driver of the Prius floor it around the track. I mean they had the petal to the metal and all the M3 had to do is keep up. So, I watched the M3 stroll around the track right behind the Prius. The results…the Prius got 17.4 mpg and the M3 got 19.8 mpg! What does it all mean?
It means if you have a lead foot, you will get crappy gas mileage. I have a lead foot and when I drove the Prius (read about my adventure here) and gunned it, I watched the computer show as low as 7.8 mpg. The difference is the Prius forces you to drive conservatively because it can’t go any faster. Trust me, I know, I tried and failed.
