Classic car auction brings in $16.5M

February 4th, 2009

KISSIMMEE - The Mecum classic car auction held Jan. 22-24 at Kissimmee's Osceola Heritage Park took in $16.5 million in gross sales, which was up from $15.2 million in 2008.

Auction attendance was up 51 percent over last year.

"We're declining to participate in this recession," said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auctions.

Mecum had been expecting to sell between 40 percent and 50 percent of the 750 vehicles offered, but 58 percent were sold.

As expected, the top bid went to a 1963 "Gulf One" Chevrolet Corvette Z06 race car that had an extensive competition history, including the 12 Hours of Sebring. It sold for $1.05 million, the only vehicle to top $1 million.
