Car Chases
There are many movies out there with car chases in them.  All the way from Thelma & Louise to the most famous Bullitt.  But, what makes a good car chase?  I think I have narrowed it down to 2 things.  First, the cars.  Second, the "believability", if that's a word.  Other notable arguments are drivers, where it happened, the route, the action etc.  But I think the cars and realism are key.  Let's break it down.
Why are all the chase scenes in the Bond movies awesome?  The car.  Why was the Bullitt chase scene the best?  The cars.  The car chase scene in the Italian Job has received great accolades.  What don't remember it?  They were driving Coopers.  However, do you remember the chase scene in Gone in 60 seconds with Nike Cage?  Yep, Mustang Eleanor.  So, if someone was running around town in a Yugo and being chased by a Gremlin, I don't think anyone will tune into that.  However, replace the Yugo with a ZR1 and have the new SRT8 Challenger chase it, SIGN ME UP!  But it's not all about the cars.
We need to feel a sense that we can pull off that chase scene.  Many new movies have the cars jumping buildings, standing on 2 wheels and doing things that will leave the car in pieces.  Take the chase in the recent Dukes of Hazard movie.  Cool drifting, cool driving, cool moves then a 500 foot launch off the highways embankment.  You lost me.  Although I enjoyed the movie and the Dukes are known for their jumps. Tune it down a little and everybody would enjoy it more.  Again, with the more recent Gone in 60 Seconds movie, cool car, sweet moves, awesome slides, great navigation, then...stupid ass jump.  Stick to the basics Hollywood, less is more.
Let's look at the best car chases.  First Bullitt, sweet cars, sweet view, believable chase, real mistakes and small jumps.  The best chase scene ever.  The opening chase scene in Mad Max, sweet American muscle, open roads, bad ass driver, NO JUMPS and a correct ending.  Nice chase.  Fast and the Furious, "700 horsepower of Detroit Muscle....Why don't you drive it?....Scares the hell out'a me!"  Classic line, classic car, real chase, real city...NO JUMPS and a dramatic wreck.  Terminator 2, the Big Rig chasing the Harley, sweet rides, plausible location (in the concrete rivers), cool Harley jump that can happen and spectacular crash in the end.
So, let's recap.  Crappy 1971 Volaire chasing a VW bus? No thanks.  A Pinto chasing...chasing...well anything?  Not a chance.  A VW Thing chasing an Isuzu  Trooper?  What...is this Russia?  On the other hand, a Ferrari Daytona versus a Cobra?  Sweet!  An Aston Martin Vanquish versus a Jaguar XKR?  Rock on!  An Audi TT versus a Porsche Carrera?  B-E-A-utiful!!  By the way, can you guess the movies?!?!?

Me: Alright...
Nonna: Whena you getta out, my apartamenta is on the left.  Witha you elbow, pusha my doorbell.
Me:  Nonna, why do I have to keep using my elbow?
Nonna:  What? You comma empty handed?
