Being a Fan
Hello all, the board of directors (my wife and I) decided to vear away from the classic car arena and decided to send this article out that I wrote in response to a pain in the butt friend of mine. I know we are taking a chance here because we added close to 1000 members with the commercial campaign I did last week. But, I think they will like it. Next Newsletter, I promise will be about cars and the AZ auctions.
To all my friends and family, I would like to explain who and why I am a fan of the Arizona Cardinals. People have been ridiculing Arizonans for jumping on the band wagon for the Cardinals, so here's my rant.
I was born in Ottawa, Ontario Canada to Italian parents. I then moved to Toronto when I was six. When I was 13 we moved to Paradise Valley, Arizona. When I graduated from Saguaro High School, I moved to Tucson and attended the University of Arizona. Through college I worked on several classic cars, making me a fan of the automotive industry.
So here it goes.
1) I am a fan of the Arizona Cardinals. I moved here before they moved here from St. Louis. I am not that guy who buys jerseys, but I do have a hat. Always watched them and always wished for them to win. Didn't have a team before they got here, so that was a no brainer.
2) I am a fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks. My favorite sport is baseball and love to watch them any chance I get. However, I am also a Blue Jay's fan and cheered for them when they won the World Series...twice. I love Joe Carter. So, you can say in the National League I am a Dbacks fan and in the American League I am a Blue Jay's fan. If they played each other, I don't know who I would cheer for.
3) I am a fan of the Coyotes. I was born in Canada, played hockey until I moved here. Watched the Leafs every chance I got. Hate the Habs. When I moved to Arizona, the only hockey team playing on TV in the desert were the LA Kings. As a side note, I always enjoyed watching Wayne Gretsky and was a big fan of his. Then he got traded to the Kings. I now was a fan of them. Then, the Coyotes came to town and Gretsky became their coach. BIG FAN! So, I am both a fan of the Leafs and the Coyotes.
4) I am a fan of the Phoenix Suns. I have watched them since I moved here. I hate John Paxon. I hate the Spurs. I can't wait for them to finally win the Championship.
5) I am a fan of the UofA Wildcats. For obvious reasons. Bear down Arizona, Bear down Red and Blue... I am a fan of all teams UofA, football, basketball, baseball, and softball. I even cheered for the swim team.
6) I am a fan of Danika Patrick...because I like to go fast and she is smoking hot.
7) I am a fan of the Andretti's for two reasons, they go fast and they are a good nice family, almost as cool as mine ;-) Go Marco!
8) I am a fan of all things funny. Dumb and Dumber, Tommy boy, Seinfeld etc. There's too much negativity in this world and we need to make the rest of the time funny.
9) I am a fan of the PAC 10 and yes if AS”who” is in the Rose Bowl, I would be cheering for them. However, if they are playing the Cats, I hate them.
10) I am a fan of Fords. I have owned all kinds of classic Fords, from Mustangs to Fairlanes, from Cyclones to Continentals. However, I am also a fan of Mopars. However, I currently own a Cutlass. So, I guess I'm messed up here. I am a fan of all horsepower that dominated this earth.
11) I am a fan of all underdogs. If I don't care about the teams that are playing, I usually root for the underdog.
12) I am a fan of making history. So, when the Red Sox were playing the Yankees and down 3 games to none, Go Sox! Am I a fan of them now? No. Unless they make history. What does that mean? Let's put it this way, if the Cubs are in the Series then I am rooting for them.
13) I am a fan of all good things Italian...pasta, meatballs, Italian Soccer, my wife, my parents, my grandfather, my grandmother (who once served me boiled pears), my name, Rome, pizza by the pound, espresso, the cars (oh the cars....), olives and their oil, shoes, bacci ball, talking with your hands, walking arm in arm (even with a dude), Venice, Sophia Loren, the wine, prosciutto con formaggio, and the Pope (even though he is not Italian, but lives at the Vatican). I think that's it.
Just because I don't attend all the home games, or paint my face, or buy every jersey of every team doesn't make me any less of a fan. So, to all of those people who root for a team from a town or city they never lived in, or a school they never went to, who is jumping on the band wagon now?
To my buddy who lived in the Cape for 1 hour, to my bro who has never even been to Denver, to the guy in the bar that I argued with for one hour about who is better ASU or UofA only to find out that he never went to ASU, to all the Cowboy fans that don't even know where Texas is, sit down and zip it. To all the people that migrated to this town (Phoenix) and root for their old town, don't be jerky. There is a reason you left that town and your obligation is to 2 towns now. Your roots and your new home.
And one last thing, GO BIG RED! Kurt, bring on the hurt!
