Seeking Early Cadillac Dealer List

1909 Cadillac 341
August 13th, 2014 06:27:36 pm, posted by Saralinda Hooker

Hello Cadillac enthusiasts,
I am working on a research project concerning a building in Niagara Falls, NY, which was the home of a Cadillac dealer (Lammerts Auto) from 1909 until the early 1960s. There is a local legend that this was the first Cadillac dealer, although I find that hard to believe since Cadillac had already been in business for 7 years when Lammerts became a dealer in 1909.  I am looking for information that might help to clarify this matter and establish whether Lammerts was at least the first Cadillac dealer in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area or Western New York. Does anyone out there know where I might locate list of names and addresses of U.S. Cadillac dealers in the early years of the company?

I am also curious about another matter concerning the same property and business. The individual who established the dealership, Peter Lammerts, died in 1941 at age 80, and his obituary said that he was "known as the oldest Cadillac dealer in point of service in the United States". Can anyone explain to me what is meant by the term "point of service"?  I'm wondering whether this means that at age 80 he was the oldest dealership owner in business at the time, or that his dealership had been in business longer than any other one that was still around in 1941.  Can anybody shed light on this question, or suggest where I might look for an answer. I tried the cadillacdatabase, which has some sales brochures from 1902-04 indicating that there were 36 cadillac dealerships in 1903, and 80 in 1904 but afte that there is no reference to dealer lists.

Another avenue I thought of is classic car clubs from the Buffalo or western New York region. Can anyone suggest a name of someone for me to contact locally?

Thanks for your help.
