Powerglide Trans Question1967 Chevrolet IMPALA SS |
April 16th, 2010 12:24:46 pm, posted by Tom Mackson |
Hello,
I new to this community. I have a 67 Impala SS convertible in great shape. It has the factory two speed powerglide in it that shifts so smoothly all you can hear is the engine changing rpms. Recently, I checked the fluid level while it was at normal operating temperature, on a level floor, engine running in park. The level was below the add mark, so instead of adding fluid I decided to change it and put in a new filter and pan gasket. Big, Big Mistake!!! I used four quarts of Castrol DEX/MERC ATF, which clearly stated on the back of the container to be used in older GM and Ford vehicles prior to 2005. After I changed the fluid, I started the car up, and filled the level to the full mark being careful not to overfill it. Once that was done I got in the car and shifted it though each of the gears for 15 seconds. I checked for leaks and felt confident to take it out for a spin. Well, nothing but bad happened after that. I went a total of two blocks from my house when I noticed something was not right. I pulled in off the road and immediately the transmission would not pull in any gear. It feels and sounds like it is in neutral no matter what gear I have it in. I had to have it towed back to my garage where it now sits. I am not sure what to do now except cry and wish that I would have left well enough alone. Please Help!! Did I trash the trans or is there hope?
Tom
