Classic cars roll through Greenfield Village

September 12th, 2009

Classic cars from the 1890s to 1932 roll into Greenfield Village today and Sunday for the 59th annual Old Car Festival. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Dearborn location on Village Road off Oakwood Boulevard. Entry to the Old Car Festival is free with Greenfield Village admission or membership to The Henry Ford; admission is $22 adults, $21 seniors (62 and up) and $16 youth (5-12), and free for younger than 5 and members.

Highlights both days include pass-in-review parades near the Thomas Edison statue with descriptions of the cars by historians Marty Bufalini, Bob Casey, David Liepelt, Glenn Miller and Ross Hill. Visitors also can watch as a team from Canada assembles a Model T in just a few minutes, see a bicycle parade, a 1920s auto touring presentation, car and bicycle games and get a chance to meet "Lizzie," a Model T from the fleet at The Henry Ford. The also can learn about Henry Ford's rubber plantation in South America from Greg Grandin, author of "Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City."

Tonight, the Hotel Savarine Society Orchesta plays favorite 1920s tunes for listening and dancing, and there's a Gaslight Parade of Cars featuring automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and bicycles taking to the streets after dark amid an array of gaslight, kerosene, and early electric lamps. A fireworks display finishes the evening.

Music and dramatic performances are offered throughout both days, including "Simply Gershwin," a 30-minute music and comedy revue; "The 1929 Medley," a special medley of songs performed by the Greenfield Singers in celebration of the 80th anniversary of The Henry Ford; and The Model T Medley, a lively assortment of Model T songs and jokes.

Visitors also can stop at the Benson Ford Research Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today for an open house and sale on vintage automotive literature and photographs.
