To fight its opposition on the street Ford built the Fairlane 427, which had widened shock towers and larger front coil springs to fit a detuned 427 V8. Unfortunately, the Fairlane 427 was costly to build, so only 70 units were made in 1966 and 200 in 1967. Most went to pro racers for NHRA Super Stock competition.
