I had the same exact problem with a 56 Chevy with a 327 back in the early 70's, never found out what it was either. I've done some research on that problem and a few people with the same dilemma said to try jumping the starter solenoid on the two contacts with a screwdriver right after you turn the engine off and see if it cranks. Some said it had something to do with the starter getting overheated and it had to cool down before working again. Try jumping the starter after you turn it off and if it cranks when you jump the starter solenoid then you might just only need a new starter or solenoid.
