I don't know much about Chevy's but the same problem happened to my in my Ford. It ended up being the wrong type of oil. I looked on the Castrol site (http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=82915486&contentId=7027043) and found out that the DEX/MERC ATF cannot be used if your car required Dexron VI (which I doubt they used back then) and Mercon. I trust one of our Chevy members will know which one to use exactly.
