no timing belt |

An 02 explorer does not have timing belts, it has timing chains. It does not matter if is a 4.0 sohc or 4.6 it has chains. To answer the question if a timing chain breaks it will most likley bent valves. The 4.0 sohc motors have alot of problems with the chain cassettes in the heads. Lots of $ to repair!! Most later ford vehicles with timing belts if they break will not bend valves. not the case with yours.
