Generator light doesnt come on1968 Pontiac LEMANS |
August 2nd, 2011 06:13:37 pm, posted by Greg Simonis |
When I start my car the generator light on the dash no longer comes on. Here's the scoop:
I have a 1968 Pontiac LeMans with a 1976 Pontiac 350, internal regulator in the alternator with an external regulator on the firewall. It has been this way for 17 years, which was the last time I put in an alternator.
I have been driving my car since late May with no issues. July 4, 2011 I drive it to a party and then later that day I go to start it up for the return trip home. She won't start - nothing, nada, zilch. Just lights on the dashboard. I find that the battery connections are loose so I clean em up and tighten em back down. She starts but the generator light on the dash came on and now stays on.
Ok, so I think the alternator has gone bad so I buy a new rebuilt unit and install it. Same story, car starts but the generator light stays on. I check the battery and my alternator using my digital voltmeter and everything checks out fine. Battery is good, alternator is charging.
Ok, so next step I bypass my external regulator but now my generator light does not come on at all. Not even when I start my car.
What gives? What do I do next?
