Apologies, again
Last Monday I was fortunate to have the day off from work and went to meet my IT guys for some updates.  It was at this time that I realized that I haven't been receiving emails from my members out there.  You see, we have many email addresses and I wasn't checking the 'newsletter' address.  In my defense I thought it was forwarded on to my home email, I blame Steve...yes you Steve, you know who you are ;-) Just kidding.  So, I would like to formally apologize to all that have sent me an email that I did not reply to.  I do try really hard to get through all of the emails, and I promise that I will always try to reply to all of your emails.  It is my pledge to you.  Once again....on to Robosaurus!

Robosaurus
"Joseph, why the hell do you keep talking about that stupid big hunk of metal?"  My answer....I don't know...I think it's cool....fun...whatever it's my Newsletter!
So, the big buzz at BJ (I refer to the Barrett-Jackson as BJ) is what car (or thing) will beat the record of $5 million for Carroll's Super Snake.  So, let's first recap, 2005 was the Buick Concept at $3 million, 2006 was the Futureliner at $4 million and 2007 was Carroll Shelby's Super Snake at $5 million.  What's it going to be for 2008?  Shelby's personal GT500? Nope.  The first 2009 ZR1? Nope.  The first 2008 GT500KR? Not exactly.  The Rondine Corvette Concept? Close.  "Joseph is it Robo?"  Yes!...well, OK no! Actually, nothing even broke the $2 million mark.  So, why am I writing about it?  It's because I want to re-emphasize that it seems to be over. What? I am talking about the muscle car values.  You see, I think BJ added Robosaurus to try and break the record.  Although it entertains, it was 20 years old and showed it.
Anyway, I sat there and waited for about 30 cars to cross the block, then Robo!  Was there a buzz? Nope.  Did they do a quick show? Nope.  Was there an idiot talking like a robot to get people to bid? Yep.  Did it sound cheesy? You bet.  So, the auctioneers started the bid and worked their best to get the money up.  It only sold for $575,000.  Not exactly $5 million.  So, what was the difference from last year?  Everything.  The money wasn't there, the market wasn't there and the excitement wasn't there.  So, what's the next question?  Are those cars really worth that much?  I don't know.  I do know this, it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.  My dad got me interested in cars in the late 80's and early 90's.  I remember the Jaguars and Ferrari's going for millions back then.  How much are they now? $300k.  If that.  So, what have we learned here?  If someone offers you more than what you paid for the car....sell it!  Unless there is sentimental value and your dad's dad dad handed down the car, don't sell it.  Always remember, if there is one, there's two.  "What do you mean Joseph?"  Even if the car is 1 of 1 and you are set on that car, I guarantee you will have an opportunity to buy that car again.  So, be patient, be smart, be prepared and ooooh oooh take the money and run!  This is a good segway in to the next article.

Auction Excitement!
So, I just got done ripping on auctions and how they inflate prices.  Now I'm going to tell you how awesome they are!

My father-in-law submitted his 1951 Ford F-1 truck to cross the block in the Russo & Steele auction.  Not BJ because his auction does not allow a reserve price.  He was dealt with the Sunday afternoon card.  Yes the truck was almost the last car to roll across the block.  Not good.  We went into the tent and there were about 20 people bidding on cars.  Not good.  The 10 cars that rolled across the block before the truck didn't sell.  Not good.  My father-in-laws reserve price, pretty high.  Not good.  So, as you can see, the cards were stacked against us.
The car before the truck was a '62 corvette and the gentlemen had a reserve which it did not meet.  Then in comes the truck...and man did that yellow POP under those lights.  The truck rolled up perfectly and the auctioneer started the bidding.  My wife, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, his wife and I all watched with excitement.  Before the auction, we calculated what his "break even" point was and then decided what he would let if go for.  In other words, he was prepared.  Then the fast talker started in "what do you wanna give for..." and then it happened.  Two people wanted the truck and the race began! One of the assistants approached my father-in-law and asked what his bottom line was.  He then motioned to the auctioneer and he tried even harder.  The bid got to what my father-in-law wanted and the reserve was lifted.  Meaning, the auctioneer announced "WE ARE SELLING THE TRUCK TODAY!"  And then it went higher.  Man was it awesome!  The gavel dropped and the ladies cheered...OK...I cheered too.  So what have we learned?  Don't count your chickens before they've hatched...no that's not it.  Even when the cards are stacked against you, give it the ol' college try!  And you'll be surprised.

So there you have it.  I hope you have enjoyed this Newsletter.
