The License Plate Law
I was surfing the net the other day and I came across an article here in AZ about a new law that requires all car owners to remove any license-plate holders that obstruct the ARIZONA title across the top. What this means is, if you have a license plate holder that covers the word ARIZONA at the top of your plate, you will get a ticket.
First, let me point you to the article, click here, and then specifically to the part where it states “drivers with out-of-state plates are exempt from the law.” Now, the reason for this law is because Arizona has over 40 different plate styles and the Legislature passed it so it would be easy to identify if the plate is from Arizona. Here is what I do not understand. Let’s take a look at the possible scenarios.
Scenario 1. Let’s say two Arizonians get it to an accident and one flees the scene. A bystander sees the car and writes down the license plate number. If the bystander is from Arizona, they should know the colors of the most common plates and easily identify that it was an Arizona plate. If the bystander was not from Arizona, possibly a snowbird, then they will not know the colors and will be unable to provide that information to the officers. In both cases the plate number will have to be run through the Arizona license plate database.
Scenario 2. Now one Arizonian and one non-Arizonian have an accident. This time the non-Arizonian flees and a witness writes down the plate number. If the witness is from Arizona, they will have no idea where the plate is from. If the witness is not from Arizona, they also will have no idea where the plate is from. However the witness from Arizona would be able to tell the officer that it wasn’t a normal plate. So, in both cases the officer will have to do some detective work and probably will run the plate through the AZ database.
Let’s recap, out of four different situations, every time the officer should and will need to “run the plate” through the AZ database. This leads me back to my original concern, “drivers with out-of-state plates are exempt from the law.” These are the plates that we don’t know and with AZ being a hugely popular snow bird state, they are the ones that are not helpful to the police. Besides, if you are one that has the awareness to grab someone’s plate number as they are fleeing from the scene, will you be looking for what state it is in? And besides, besides, I bet with the technology today, if a witness gets the plate number and not the state, the police department will find what state it is from in a matter of minutes.
I want to write something witty here, or write a saying that my dad taught me years ago that applies to this situation, but I got nothing. Anyway, let me know what you think, click here.
Questions and Answers
Hello all. I need your help. The website is moving along quite nicely on information superhighway. However, the Q&A section has stalled and we need to jumpstart that baby back to life. Many members have posted many questions that have gone unanswered. So, I am asking the members of this community to do two things. First, log in your account and select the “My Expertise” link in the box towards the top of the page. Please, select the top three makes that you are very familiar with. In other words, if you are Mustang man, then your first selection would be Ford, then maybe Mercury as a second choice and finally Lincoln for your third. If you like Mopars, select Dodge, Plymouth and then Chrysler. What this does is when a fellow member asks a question regarding a Mustang, all those who selected Ford as their expertise will receive an email asking if they know the answer. So, please, log in and select your expertise.
Second, feel free to take a look at the existing questions and see if you can answer any of them. I created short cuts at the top of the page, so if you are a Cadillac person, then just click the Cadillac logo and only Cadillac questions will appear.
I would like to thank all that have helped so far and look forward to the many interactions in the future.
Thanks again,
Joseph
