Classic Recreations drops EcoBoost engine in Shelby continuation Mustangs |

Classic Recreations, based in Yukon, Oklahoma, is in the business of building classic Shelby Mustang continuation models under license, typically with modern mechancials. Some beauties include this 1966 Mustang Fastback Shelby GT350CR and even the fictional ‘Eleanor’ Mustang from the movie Gone In 60 Seconds.
While most customers here in the United States opt for a big, hulking V-8 lump, preferences are different in markets where fuel prices can be much higher and taxes are based on displacement. That’s why Classic Recreations is now offering its customers some of Ford Motor Company’s downsized EcoBoost engines.
The engines include the 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost for worldwide markets plus a 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost specifically targeted at the Chinese market.
“For years we have proudly hand-built the only officially licensed Shelby Mustang continuation cars in the world, but that doesn't mean we are stuck in the past," Classic Recreations owner Jason Engel said in a statement. "Our clients come from all over the world and they expect the very best--they want the looks of a classic Shelby, with the performance and reliability of a modern sports car.”
The V-6 unit comes with a stock 365 horsepower thanks to a twin-turbocharging system and direct fuel injection but Classic Recreations says this can be upped to more than 600 horsepower with modifications such as a larger set of turbos. The four-cylinder is the same unit found in the Focus ST but instead of a stock 252 hp Classic Recreations is offering up the engine with 300 hp on tap.
In addition to being more fuel efficient than the current V-8 offerings, these smaller EcoBoost engines are much lighter and according to Classic Recreations this gives the cars a lighter and more agile feel. Another added benefit is that the engines can be served at most Ford dealerships since they’re offered in the automaker’s regular lineup.
