Chicks dig the car

What’s in a car?  Why are there so many different styles, different colors, different sizes, different makes, models…?  Why?  Why do guys always name their cars ladies names?  Why do guys spend hours upon hours upon hours fixing up their cars?  Why do we have big engines, flashy colors, fender skirts, loud stereos…? Why?

I know why…..’cause chicks dig the car…I have proof.

It was 1991, I was 40 lbs lighter and fortunate enough to drive a ’67 Convertible Mustang (check me out) throughout my college days.  It was a beautiful sunny day in Tucson, Arizona.  The top was down, our shirts were off and we were hungry.  I pulled into a Jack in the Crack drive thru and noticed two young ladies in the car in front of me.  My radio was pounding and I gave little rap on the horn to get their attention.  She looked in the mirror and I waived a little hello.  They laughed and pulled forward to the next window.  We then yelled our order through the speaker and pulled forward to the window.  As I rolled up to the window, the girls were getting their food and I gave another little rap on the horn and waived goodbye.  As we were getting our food, the guy through the window gave me a piece of paper and said that “the girls in front of you told me to give this to you.”  It said “Summer 554-4321.”  I immediately turned to my buddy and yelled “it’s the car! I told you, it’s the car!”  My buddy said no way and started the deliberation of should we call them or not.

That night there was a lengthy discussion about why these ladies gave us their number.  I argued the car, one friend said it was because of us and my other friend said “why don’t you just call them and ask?”  He was the smarter one.  So we called.  First, I thought it was a BS number because it was 5-4-3-2-1.  Total fake number, right?  Sure enough, my buddy called and Summer answered.  He started the small talk and I was in the background yelling “Ask her!”  So finally he asked, “Why did you give us your number?”  I ran into my room, dove across my bed and picked up the other phone, “well you know two cute guys in a convertible mustang….”  So, there you have it.  Chicks dig the car!

We met the ladies out, cruised around in the car and had a good time.  Of course my buddy emphasized the “two cute guys” and I emphasized the “convertible mustang.”  We agreed that we were both right.

I have come to this conclusion, it’s not that the car attracts the women, it’s how your attitude, demeanor and/or confidence changes when you drive a cool car.  I mean, would the ladies have given their number if I was in a Pinto (sorry Pinto drivers)?  Or, would I have even thought to honk if I was in a Pinto?  Hmmm, it’s a mystery.

Finally, I quote my wife, “what the heck are you doing with that piece of junk?” She was referring to my Cutlass that I was restoring (check it out). “I can’t believe you. It’s junk.  I will never ride in that thing.  It’s a money pit…” yadda yadda yadda.  “Shaddap, shaddap” I said to myself on the inside.  However, once it was completed, she hopped in without any hesitation and said “let’s ride.”  “Ohhhhh, you want to ride in the Cutlass now…”  She then said “Shaddap, shaddap…” on the outside!

So there you have it.  I hope you have enjoyed this Newsletter.
