1966 Mercury Cyclone GT
Here comes another story about that infamous Cyclone GT.  Don't you remember?  The one that Charlie "passed" on?  Where should I start?  My brother is 2 years older than me and went off to college and left his Cyclone back home for his first semester.  One weekend by parents went away on vacation and I took the Cyclone out for a spin.  It's not that I wasn't allowed, it just wasn't my daily driver.  So, I buckled up my sister and picked up a couple of friends and went for a nice drive.
The first stop was the ice cream shop where another friend of mind worked.  As we were getting out of the car, my sister asked "what is this place?"  And I replied, "this place has the best ice cream in the world!"  She asked "why?"...."because it's free."  Sorry 'bout dat Best Little Ice Cream Shop in Scottsdale.  C'mon, you would've had some.
So, my sister, two buddies of mine, one of their girlfriends and myself sat outside the ice cream shop, eating the best free ice cream in the world wondering what we were going to do that night.  Just then, one of my buddies had a revelation...."Let's go cruising!"  And there you have it, we just drove around all night.  Does everybody remember cruising?
Here is where the story gets good.  Our Cyclone did not have the original 390 engine that it came with, we put in a 428 Super Cobra Jet, with a hot cam, Holly 750 and headers.  Yes that thing was fast.  So, there we were, driving around and as I came to the next traffic light, I noticed a 60's vette in the middle lane of the 3 lane street.  I moved over to the far right and came up beside him.  I looked forward and noticed that my lane merges into his lane in about 200 feet.  We looked at each other and smiled, he revved and then I revved.  His lady smiled and my gang cheered.  It was on.  Light changes green and we both punch it.
We were side by side for the first 100 feet.  He graciously moved over to the left lane so that I can merge into his lane.  We kept going...30, 40, 50, 60+!  It was awesome.  When he shifted that's when I caught him and I leaped ahead.  Now, I know a lot you out there are saying "no way!"  But let's face it, only 5% of us out there really know how to drive a stick shift.  I had an automatic and it shifted at about 55, which was much later than he shifted.  And it shifted a lot faster.  Plus, I think he only had a 327 under the hood.
I am now about a car length ahead of him and then it happens, my accelerator pedal is stuck to the floor.  The car just kept going, and going, and going.  I was up to 90 and still climbing.  I yelled at my buddy, "PEDAL's STUCK!"  At this time, I had both feet planted on the break pedal, slowed down a little but still not good.  "Throw it in neutral" my buddy yells.  I did and the car redlines immediately.  Not good, might blow the engine.  Kick back into drive and the car takes off again!
By this time the Vette knows something is wrong and backs off, I knew I needed to shut her down.  With both feet on the break, I pull into the center left turn lane, threw it in neutral and turned the key off.  BANG!!  The Cyclone backfires with a huge plum of smoke coming out the exhaust.  But we were stopped.
I jumped out and lifted the hood.  Just then the vette rolls up behind me, and then a cop behind him.  The vette driver asked what happened and I stated "pedal got stuck."  The officer asked if everyone was OK and helped with his flashlight in the engine bay.  My sister, my buddy and his girlfriend were in the backseat, oblivious to the whole thing.  It was then that I noticed the rather large chrome oil cap on the valve cover came off, rolled back and fell in between the throttle linkage and the engine block, holding the throttle wide open.  I grabbed the oil cap and put it back on and we were on our way.  What a ride!
So, what have we learned?  Don't panic.  Assess the situation, understand the car and plan accordingly.  I was just talking with my dad this weekend that you can be "in tune" with your car and you will know something is wrong before it happens.  So, take it easy and remember the most important thing of this story...
I beat the Vette!

Another Apology
I am sure you all noticed that I didn't write last weeks newsletter.  Sorry 'bout dat.  The little lady was out of town last week and I was having way to much fun and simply forgot to write it.  Just kidding, I didn't forget, just didn't have the time.  You see, with the lady out of town, this was my chance to get all those little things done around the house without interuption.  I promise it won't happen again....well, until next week.  My wife and I are going on a little vacation to Miami.  So, to all of my South Beach friends, let me know where the cruises are!
Let's recap, sorry 'bout last week, you're reading this weeks, and will be on vacation next week.  Thanks
