1939    Return to Best Ride Main Page

The Speed King Auto Racer was part of a fleet of 30 or so cars that raced at the 1939-1940 New York Worlds Fair Midway. There are perhaps six or so left. I found mine stripped out in Reading PA in 1996, and restored it over the winter of 2006-2007. The original Cushman engine was gone so I installed a 16 HP Briggs & Stratton Vanguard. The bodies and chassis were apparently handmade by the R. E. Chambers Engineering Co. of Beaver Falls PA, with grille shells supplied by the American Bantam plant in nearby Butler PA. All instrumentation and lights are operable, and the car is a summertime fixture on the streets and car meets in Kenosha, WI. It's a minor but fascinating piece of American automotive history, and of Worlds Fair lore as well.
